My Favourite Free Tools for Learning European Portuguese
I don’t use loads of apps or subscriptions to learn Portuguese but I do rely on a few trusted free tools. Some I use almost daily, others I dip into when I need support.
Here’s what’s worked for me and what might work for you too.
📘 1. Infopedia.pt
This is my go-to online dictionary. It has:
- Accurate definitions
- Clear European Portuguese pronunciation
- Example sentences
- Synonyms and grammar notes
If I’m unsure about a word or want to hear how it’s pronounced, this is where I go first.
🎧 2. Podcasts and YouTube
I like to listen to Portuguese Podcasts for beginners. It helps me absorb the rhythm and sound of the language without feeling lost. I can also listen to these while I'm driving which saves time.
I’ve tried:
- Portuguese podcasts aimed at learners
- Slower dialogue shows (like Say It in Portuguese)
- YouTube channels (like Practice Portuguese) — some free content
Even if I don’t understand everything, it builds listening stamina.
📺 3. RTP / Netflix
RTP is Portugal’s public broadcaster. You can watch:
- News
- Documentaries
- Soap operas
- Kids’ shows (great for beginners!)
All for free. A great way to hear “real” Portuguese in action.
Netflix also have a few films and series in Portuguese, you can easily add English subtitles if you need more help.
🔍 4. Other Tools Worth Trying
- Priberam Dictionary – A bit more formal than Infopedia, but solid.
- YouTube channels – A quick search for “European Portuguese listening practice” often leads to gold.
Final Thought
You don’t need a big budget to learn Portuguese.
Start with what’s free and consistent and build from there. For me, these tools have helped create a solid foundation, and they’re always just a click away.
