What I’d Do Differently if I Started Portuguese Again
I’ve been learning European Portuguese for a few years now, and while I’m proud of the progress I’ve made, I’ve definitely learned a few lessons the hard way.
If I were starting again, here’s what I’d do differently.
1. Start Speaking Sooner
Like many learners, I waited until I “knew enough” before trying to speak. In hindsight, I’d start speaking with a tutor (or even to myself!) much earlier, even if it felt awkward. I'd also try speaking to more people out and about, shopping is good way to do this.
2. Focus Less on Perfect Grammar Early On
Grammar is important, but in the beginning I got too caught up in rules. I'd now focus more on communication, repetition, and exposure, grammar can come later.
3. Embrace Repetition (Even When It’s Boring)
I didn't like reviewing old material but of course, repetition is essential, especially for verbs and listening comprehension.
4. Record Myself More Often
Recording myself speaking helped me identify pronunciation patterns and gain confidence. I’d do this weekly from the start if I could go back.
5. Use Fewer Resources, But Use Them Well
I used to collect every textbook, podcast, and course I could find. Now I’d pick two or three good resources and stick with them.
🧭 Final Thought
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but if you’re just starting your Portuguese journey, maybe my lessons can save you a little time and stress.
Start small. Stick with it. You’ll get there.
