What to Do When You Hit a Wall

There comes a point in every language journey where things slow down. It feels like you’re not making progress, no matter how much effort you put in.

That’s the plateau and it’s perfectly normal.

🎧 Accept That It’s Part of the Process

You’re not doing anything wrong. In fact, hitting a wall usually means you’ve already made significant progress you’ve moved beyond beginner territory and now need new strategies.

🧠 Change Something, Anything

The brain responds to novelty. If your routine feels stale, try switching things up:

  • Swap reading for listening
  • Try a new podcast or TV show
  • Speak to a different tutor
  • Review old material in a new way

Sometimes even changing your time of day or study location can refresh your mindset.

📉 Track Something (But Not Everything)

Plateaus feel worse when progress is invisible. Pick one thing to track, like:

  • How many days in a row you study
  • How many minutes you listen per week
  • How many new words you review

That small bit of visible progress can keep you moving forward.

💬 Go Back to Why

Remind yourself why you started learning Portuguese in the first place. Whether it’s travel, citizenship, or just personal growth, your “why” is your fuel.

🧭 Final Thought

Plateaus aren’t dead ends. They’re part of how your brain consolidates learning.

Take a breath. Keep going. You’re closer than you think.
